Particulate organic carbon in Atlantic surface waters

Naturevolume 266pages713716 (1977) | Download Citation

PARTICIPATE organic matter (POM) in the oceans has a vital role in marine ecology as it is the major food source for living organisms in surface and deep waters. Nearly all of the suspended organic matter in the oceans originates from phyto-plankton productivity in the euphotic layers and is comprised of living plankton and dead organisms (detritus). Because of the importance in the marine food web of suspended organic phases in seawater several investigations on their distribution and composition have been carried out1–3.
