Monitoring the marine environment for mutagens

Abstract

VARIOUS chemicals found in the environment are mutagenic when tested in an appropriate screening system1, and some of them are deposited as waste in the seas and oceans, where they may or may not be deactivated. A means of monitoring the marine environment for the presence or absence of mutagens would give some indication of the efficiency of disposal of industrial waste products. In an attempt to minimise the technical problems, we have developed a biological assay for the detection of such pollutants.
