Low angle X-ray diffraction patterns of squid retina

Abstract

THE structure of photoreceptor membranes in the rod outer segments of vertebrates has been studied using X-ray diffraction1–3, and electron density profiles of the disk membrane at a resolution of 14 Å have been obtained4. The ultra-structure of invertebrate rhabdomeric visual cells have been studied using electron microscopy5 and birefringence6, but not X-ray methods. We report here low angle X-ray diffraction patterns recorded from squid retina after fixation in glutaraldehyde.
