Communication through fimbriae during conjugation in a fungus

Abstract

LONG fine hairs, termed fimbriae1 or pili2, have been observed in many bacteria and in fungi3–5. Bacterial sex pili transfer chromosomal and plasmid DNA during conjugation6. This paper describes evidence that the fimbriae of the smut fungus Ustilago violacea also transfer sex-specific molecules between the two conjugants.
