Abstract

MACROPHAGES seem to be of importance in both immunologically specific and nonspecific resistance to neoplastic cells1–10. It has been proposed11–13 that activated macrophages are significant effectors in the elimination of tumour cells at sites of delayed hypersensitivity reactions induced by chemical haptens, microbial antigens or lymphokines13–18. Immunologically specific elimination of neoplastic cells by macrophages may be mediated by tumour-specific antibodies7,10,19,20. Such antibodies may also confer specificity to macrophages activated by nonspecific stimulation. Besides specificity which may be imparted by antibodies, activated macrophages seem to possess an inherent recognition mechanism which permits selective cytotoxicity towards certain categories of cells, including tumour cells11,21–23.
