Alteration of cavity geometry by structural modification of clathrate host molecules

Abstract

IN the course of systematic studies1 of the synthesis and properties of clathrate inclusion compounds we found that compound II, formed by adding a methyl group to the clathrating compound I, also exhibits clathrating properties. It was evident, however, both from preliminary crystallographic measurements and from their very different selectivities towards guest molecules that the cavities in the host structure of I and II differ markedly2. We present here details of the cavities in II and compare them with those reported earlier for I (ref. 3).
