Internal regulation of iron absorption

Abstract

MCCANCE and Widdowson1 concluded that body iron content is regulated by variation in the amount absorbed and not by variation in excretion, and many workers have since attempted to define the factors which relate iron absorption to the needs of the body. Although there is a large body of data on the intracellular mechanisms of absorption2 this has not advanced our understanding of the physiology of regulation.
