Saturable, energy-dependent, transmembrane transport of prostaglandins against concentration gradients

Abstract

SOME vertebrate tissues, such as the choroid plexus, anterior uvea, and the kidney cortex, accumulate radioactivity against a concentration gradient when incubated with 3H-prostaglandins (3H-PGs)1. This accumulation is reversible, temperature-dependent and can be inhibited by metabolic and transport inhibitors, and by high concentrations of PGs, PG analogues and some organic acids such as probenecid and indomethacin2,3.
