Reversible appearance of a specific chromosome which suppresses malignancy

Abstract

MALIGNANT cell transformation is associated with the appearance of abnormal chromosome patterns1. The degree to which malignant potential is expressed by transformed cells seems to depend on the balance between specific chromosomes responsible for the expression or suppression of malignancy2. Sachs et al.2-4 have demonstrated a relationship between these chromosomes and both oncogenic activity and cell membrane characteristics in transformed and reverted cells. Benedict et al.5, identified specific chromosomes associated with either expression or suppression of malignancy in hamster fibrosarcoma cells; tumorigenicity in different clones was related to the balance of these chromosomes.
