Lewisian age for the Scardroy Mass

Abstract

ROCKS of Lewisian aspect have long been recognised east of the Moine Thrust in Sutherland, Ross and Inverness. They were correlated with the Lewisian west of the Moine thrust on petrological grounds1 and were originally considered to be unconformably overlain by Moine rocks2. Sutton and Watson3,4 at first questioned this correlation, but later accepted the view that rocks derived from the Lewisian basement are exposed at Scardroy and elsewhere in central Ross-shire (Fig. 1), and take the form of sheets tectonically intercalated in the Moine succession5.
