Abstract
THE advantages of heterozygotes is one of the most frequent explanations of the maintenance of a polymorphism. This advantage may have the form of a lower fitness of all homozygotes, whatever the allele they possess. According to observations on a small Tuareg isolate, such is apparently the case for the polymorphism of the histocompatibility system HL-A.
