Abstract
REGENERATIVE capacity of the myocardium in vertebrates is reported to be minimal1–6. Mauro has advanced the thesis that the absence of satellite cells in the cardiac muscle is responsible7. Most recently, Oberpriller and Oberpriller have reported mitosis in adult newt myocardial cells 16 d after minor trauma8. Here we report observations on the adult salamander which indicate that cardiac regeneration of great competency occurs in this animal.
