Filamentous algae from the 2,300 m.y. old Transvaal Dolomite

Abstract

THE suggestion that stromatolites are analogous with modern algal mats was first made in 1933 (ref. 1). The earliest acceptance of this analogy was for structures in the Transvaal Dolomite2. Young described these structures in a series of papers between 1928 and 1943, most of his work being from a spectacular section in the Hoi River. This lies 1½ km north of Boetsap, some 50 km north-west of Warrenton in the northern Cape Province (Fig. 1).
