Dual Action of Praseodymium (Pr3+) on Transmitter Release at the Frog Neuromuscular Synapse

Abstract

THE release of transmitter after a nerve action potential seems to require the entry of calcium ions through the presynaptic membrane1,2. Mitochondrial uptake within the nerve terminal constitutes a possible way of removing these calcium ions temporarily3,4. While inhibition of the first process, namely the entry of calcium, would be expected to decrease the mean number of quanta liberated by a nerve impulse (quantal content, m), selective inhibition of the second process would tend to augment the release of transmitter.
