Do D-Glucosamine and D-Galactosamine Form Part of Specific Receptor Sites for Competence Substance on Cell Wall of Pneumococcus?

Abstract

D-GLUCOSAMINE and D-galactosamine probably form a part of the specific receptor sites for the competence substance on the cell wall of Pneumococcus, since these amino sugars completely inhibit the binding of the competence substance to the cell surface receptors, and, thus, the induction of competence in a genetically transformable pneumococcal strain.
