Evidence for Buffering of Dissolved Silicon in Fresh Waters

Abstract

THE widely used colorimetric method for determining dissolved silicon in natural waters measures only monomeric or low molecular weight polymers of silicic acid1. But there seems little reason to believe that appreciable amounts of higher, and therefore unreactive, polymers exist in the sea or most terrestrial waters2,3.
