Boundary between Continental and Oceanic Crust at the Margin of Rifted Continents

Abstract

From a detailed study of the continental margin off Norway we have been able to establish the presence of two buried marginal escarpments—Vøring Plateau Escarpment and the Faeroe Shetland Escarpment. We believe that these escarpments together with a segment of the Jan Mayen Fracture Zone between them define quite clearly the boundary between the continental and oceanic basement. We describe these findings and discuss their application to other continental margins.
