Abstract
ADULT male mice and rats do not readily show female sexual behaviour following castration and treatment with oestrogen and progesterone. This seems to be the result of androgens secreted during the postulated “critical period” of brain development, acting on neural structures responsible for the expression of sex-typical behaviour1,2. The golden hamster is anomalous since castrated adult males readily show lordosis in response to oestrogen/progesterone priming3,4. This response is prevented, however, if exogenous androgens are administered immediately after birth5,6.
