THE development of plate tectonics1,2 has led to the concept that the Earth's crust is divided into stable plates which were created at oceanic ridge crests, move as whole units and are subsequently destroyed in oceanic trenches. The question of where and how these three crustal elements intersect is one of the chief problems in the Earth sciences3.
