Abstract
THE statement by van Andel et al.1, that the history of the late Quaternary climate at low latitudes is a controversial issue, is still valid and equatorial Pacific records show considerable variability of conditions in the atmospheric and oceanic tropospheres2. The relationships of the present equatorial variability with atmospheric pressure shifts associated with the southern oscillation (SO)2 can be considered together with information about the operation of the SO and geological evidence, and have led to an understanding of the meteorological and oceanographic changes which occurred in the equatorial Pacific during the late Quaternary and of their evolution.
