Abstract
INJECTION of purified Schistosoma mansoni eggs into mice results in granuloma formation1, and it has been shown that egg antigen is gradually released to phagocytes which accumulate around the eggs and engage in antigen sequestration and destruction in situ2. Schistosome granuloma formation as seen in the infected host is a complex immunological response probably involving several synergistic mechanisms3. In experimental anamnestic granulomas of mice, the augmented and accelerated cell response is mediated by delayed hypersensitivity4 and is partly suppressed by immunosuppressive drugs, neonatal thymectomy, ALS (antilymphocyte serum) and X-irradiation5–8; it is slightly inhibited by ellagic acid9. Soluble egg antigens have been obtained from Schistosome eggs by phosphate buffered saline (PBS) extraction and ultra-centrifugation which enhance granuloma formation around schistosome eggs in mice and induce dermal reactivity in the mouse footpad (unpublished work of D. L. Boros and K. S. Warren). This material is currently being analysed immunochemically.
