Regular Induction of Hypomania by L-Dopa in “Bipolar” Manic-depressive Patients

Abstract

ALTHOUGH the catecholamine precursor L-dopa (L-3–4-dihydroxyphenylalanine), like most clinically effective anti-depressant drugs, reverses reserpine-induced brain catecholamine depletion and sedation1–3, early clinical trials using 1.5–3.0 g/day revealed no significant antidepressant activity4–9. Recently, we gave L-dopa to eighteen depressed patients, using the very large oral doses found to be effective in reversing many of the symptoms of Parkinson's disease10–17.
