Turnover of Basic Protein of Rat Brain

Abstract

EXPERIMENTAL allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) is a demyelinating disease which is induced by challenging experimental animals with a basic protein of myelin1–6. Myelin has long been presumed metabolically inert, but recent evidence indicates that there may be a turnover of some of the lipids7,8. One study has indicated a moderate turnover of proteolipid but little turnover of basic protein9. The present studies were undertaken to determine whether the basic protein is metabolically dynamic or stable.
