Algae thrive under Pure CO2

Abstract

ATTEMPTS to grow photosynthetic organisms (O2 producers) in CO2 have usually used CO2 as part of a mixture with other gases. Greater concentrations of CO2 are toxic to plants and decrease their photosynthetic levels through narcotic poisoning or acidification of the cell fluids1. We do not know any report of plant growth and physiological activities in anaerobic conditions with pure CO2. The relation of photosynthesis to environmental conditions such as a pure atmosphere of CO2 and light intensity is of practical interest in, for example, space biology.
