Reclamation of Toxic Metalliferous Wastes using Tolerant Populations of Grass

Abstract

THE mining of heavy metals such as copper, zinc and lead, which was widespread in Britain until the beginning of this century, has left a considerable problem in the form of extracted waste material. These tailings still contain toxic amounts of metal which poison crops and water supplies when solid material and dissolved ions are washed out of the heaps. Elsewhere in the world mining is creating vast new heaps.
