Low Magnesium and Phospholipid Content of Cell Walls of Pseudomonas aeruginosa resistant to Polymyxin

Abstract

THE resistance of the pathogenic bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa to chemical inactivation is notorious. P. aeruginosa and related species cause problems in plant pathology1,2, food spoilage3, contamination of pharmaceuticals4,5 and hospital cross-infection6,7. We report here results relating to the mechanism of resistance of this organism which may also have wider significance for Gram-negative bacteria.
