Inhibition of Lymphocyte Activation at High Ratios of Concanavalin A to Serum depends on Complement

Article metrics

WHEN certain mitogenic agents are added to lymphocytes cultured in serum, the cells are activated to transform and divide1. A dependence of the transformation response on the ratio of mitogen concentration to serum concentration has been shown with phytohaemagglutinin2, concanavalin A (our unpublished results), pokeweed mitogen and mercurous chloride3. At optimum ratios of mitogen to serum most of the lymphocytes in the culture transform, whereas at higher ratios transformation is inhibited2.
