Performance of a Bacterial RNA Polymerase Factor in an Amphibian Oocyte

Abstract

RNA polymerase1 plays a central part in bacteriophage development and in bacterial sporulation. The bacterial enzyme consists of two components2: the basic component (PC), sensitive to the antibiotic rifampicin3, and the initiation factor σ which determines the DNA sequences that can be transcribed by the basic enzyme. Bacteriophages T4 (ref. 4) and T7 (ref. 5) are known to specify their own σ factors. A change in Bacillus subtilis RNA polymerase6 has been registered during sporulation.
