Abstract
ZWITTEBIONIC buffers have already found wide application in biochemical research. Williamson and Cox1 have demonstrated the advantages for virological research of a synthetic medium for tissue culture consisting of “medium 199” modified by the addition of N-2-hydroxyethylpiperazine-N′-ethane-sulphonic acid (HEPES). Shipman2 has shown that media buffered with HEPES are suitable for the culture of various types of cell. The advantages arc that the medium does not need to be changed at frequent intervals for a long term culture, and the culture can be kept in a sealed, air-containing chamber.
