Abstract
THE interaction of tumour viruses with the interferon system has important implications for the pathogenesis of infection and transformation of cells by tumour viruses. The sensitivity of tumour viruses to interferon varies widely1–20, but at present there seems to be no marked difference in the sensitivities of DNA and RNA viruses. Viral functions reported to be inhibited by interferon are replication, virus-induced transformation and virus-specified T-antigen production in cells pretreated with interferon before virus infection. After transformation has occurred, in the case of simian virus-40 (SV40), T-antigen production and the morphology of transformation in vitro are unaffected by the antiviral action of subsequently applied interferon10,11.
