Preferential Degradation of “Messenger RNA” in Reticulocytes by Ribonuclease Treatment and Sonication of Polysomes

Abstract

IN searching for an identifiable messenger RNA from animal cells, interest has centred on a component of reticulocyte polysomal RNA with a sedimentation value of 8–10S (refs. 1–3) (called 9S RNA here), which has properties expected of a globin messenger. Here we present evidence supporting the idea that this RNA is a messenger.
