Abstract
CYTOCHROME h and helicorubin, isolated from the digestive gland and intestinal tract, respectively, of the land snail Helix pomatia1–3, have many properties in common with both the bacterial and mammalian types of cytochrome c. In the digestive gland, which is devoid of cytochrome c, cytochrome h functions as a respiratory carrier, but the biological role of helicorubin is unknown.
