Comparisons of Isolated and in vivo Mitotic Apparatuses

Abstract

MITOTIC apparatuses (MA) isolated from sea urchin eggs are not functional1, and although their biochemical composition1–5, stability6 and morphological characteristics7–10 have been studied, isolated MA may be quite different from in vivo MA. In particular, MA may lose material during isolation11, and the birefringence may be altered. We therefore studied the effect of the isolation procedure on mass and birefringence.
