Abstract
THE presence of peripheral inhibitory nerves in insects is now well established and in many respects they seem to be similar to those in Crustacea1–3. Their physiological properties are well defined and work is in progress to elucidate their function in the control of leg movements in locusts3. Evidence is presented here which shows that some insect spiracle muscles receive both excitatory and inhibitory innervation and that both types cooperate in the control of the normal activity of the spiracle.
