Influence of Alcohol on Coronary Function in Rabbits with Atherosclerosis induced by Cholesterol

Abstract

NUMEROUS animal1–10 and clinical11–20 studies have been reported which concern the problem of a possible relationship between prolonged oral ingestion of ethyl alcohol and the development of coronary atherosclerosis. In none of these studies were changes in the electrocardiogram adequately assessed, however, and many important factors, such as the exact alcohol intake, the duration of ingestion and the associated dietary regime, were invariably or inadequately controlled. I therefore embarked on a study in which all these factors were carefully controlled using the changes in the ST segment of the electrocardiogram as an index of myocardial ischaemia.
