Changes in Chromatin Structure during Interphase in Human Normoblasts

Abstract

THERE is evidence suggesting that the part of the nuclear chromatin of the cell nucleus which is in the condensed or heterochromatic form is inactive in nucleic acid synthesis. Studies with electron microscope autoradiography have suggested that only the decondensed euchromatic portions of the nucleus are engaged in DNA synthesis1–3, and similar findings for RNA have been demonstrated in various tissues3–6. Confirmation that euchromatin has much greater activity than heterochromatin in nucleic acid synthesis has also come from biochemical studies7.
