Distribution of Labelled Plant Growth Regulators within Cells

Abstract

ALTHOUGH plant growth regulators have been studied for many years, there is little agreement about their initial effects on plant cells. In recent years the biochemical functions of the various plant organelles have become more fully understood, and knowledge of the intracellular localization of growth substances might point to their primary effects. For this reason a microautoradiographic study of the intracellular localization of tritiated kinetin (3HK) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxy (acetic acid-2-14C) (2,4-D14C) in tissue excised from artichoke tubers was undertaken. For growth and cell proliferation on an artificial medium this tissue must be supplied with an auxin. Kinetin stimulates cell division in the presence of an auxin, but the requirement for it is not absolute.
