Pumping Mechanisms for Maser Action in Galactic OH

Abstract

VARIOUS pumping mechanisms depending on the absorption of radiation have been proposed as competent to invert the Λ-doublet of the 2II3/2 ground state of the OH molecule and so to explain the origin of anomalous 18 cm emission from galactic OH as stimulated emission. I argue here that the available power of radiation is likely to be too small for the purpose.
