Abstract
γ-AMINOBUTYRIC acid (GABA) has a strong depressant action on neurones in the cerebral cortex1, which is associated with an increase in membrane potential and conductance2,3. The presence of substantial amounts of GABA in the cortex has therefore led to the suggestion that GABA may be a cortical inhibitory transmitter1–3.
