Abstract
THE epicuticle of keratin is the thin outer membrane which is raised on the surface of fibres as sacs by treatment with chlorine water1 (Fig. 1). The Allwörden sacs are produced by the dissolution of material underlying the semi-permeable epicuticle, which generates an osmotic pressure and stretches the membrane2.
