Bursa of Fabricius and Immunological Tolerance

Abstract

TRANSIENT and nonspecific suppression of antibody production can be induced in chickens by neonatal removal of the bursa of Fabricius1. The role of the bursa in the initiation and maintenance of specific immunological tolerance (paralysis, unresponsiveness)2, and the characteristic features of tolerant bursaless birds, however, have not been investigated. This report concerns the antibody response of unoperated and bursectomized chickens injected early in life with large amounts of bovine gamma globulin (BGG) and later challenged with the same or an unrelated antigen.
