Comparison of Some Effects of Dipyridamole and Adenosine on Thrombus Formation, Platelet Adhesiveness and Blood Pressure in Rabbits and Rats

Abstract

DIPYRIDAMOLE (Persantin, Boehringer Ingelheim, Ltd) inhibits the entry of adenosine into red cells and hence its breakdown1,2. Adenosine is a vasodilator3 and reduces the formation of platelet thrombi4,5. Thus it would seem reasonable to predict that dipyridamole could inhibit thrombus formation, and Emmons et al.6 reported this in mechanically injured arteries of the rabbit cerebral cortex.
