Abstract
KINETIN (6-furfurylaminopurine) is known markedly to influence the rate of synthesis and degradation of plant protein and nucleic acid1. For this reason, its effect on virus infection has been of interest2–4. Although both increases and decreases in susceptibility have been noted2–4, Soans5 consistently found that when kinetin was applied to leaves of Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. “White Burley ‘necrotic’”, susceptibility to infection with tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) was reduced. Inoculation with TMV 4 days after treatment with kinetin showed reduced numbers, increased size and a delay in the appearance of the local lesions, while mixing kinetin with virus before inoculation produced no significant effects.
