External Effect of Indolyl-3-acetic Acid, Benzimidazole and B-nine on Nodulation of Cowpea

Abstract

ROOT nodules have the unique feature of fixing nitrogen1, and the chemical factors in relation to nodulation have been reviewed2. It is reported that indolyl-3-acetic acid (IAA), gibberellic acid, kinetin and some vitamins had no effect on the nodulation of excised bean roots3. Naphthalene-acetic acid inhibits, but p-chlorophenoxy-iso-butyric acid increases, the number of nodules in Trifolium subterraneum4. Vitamin B12 depresses the nodulation of clover5. Externally supplied nitrate has inhibited the nodulation of the isolated roots of bean fed 2 per cent sucrose through the bases of the roots6.
