Moisture Content of Living Trees

The variation of the water content in the stems of living trees occurs mainly within the sapwood and seems to be controlled in two ways: first, by the variation of pressure, resulting from transpiration demand, within the dead water-conducting cells; and, second, by the water demand of living parenchyma cells, especially those of the rays.
