Abstract
The Magellanic Clouds, visible in the Southern Hemisphere, are the nearest external galaxies. Their brightest stars can be distinguished unambiguously with the spectroscope. A spectral survey of the 194 brightest known stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud has provided new information on the evolution of massive stars. Such short-lived supergiants should be seen close to their birthplace in the sky.
