Abstract
THE main end products of the metabolism of sulphur amino-acids in mammals are inorganic sulphate and taurine1,2. In mammalian liver, taurine participates in the formation of conjugated bile acids3. Substantial amounts of taurine are, however, present in many extra-hepatic tissues, notably heart, muscle, brain, skin, leucocytes and platelets4–7. The biological function, if any, of taurine in these tissues is unknown.
