Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Carbonaceous Meteorites

Abstract

A FEW polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have been demonstrated in carbonaceous meteorites1,2. Polycyclic hydrocarbons can be found in a large variety of materials3 such as coal tar and pitch, products of combustion of wood, oil and petrol, and in a number of rocks and minerals4,5 including asbestos6 and manganese ores7. The origin of these hydrocarbons in minerals is difficult to explain and we have analysed samples of the Cold Bokke-veld and Orgueil meteorites to find out more about the distribution of the hydrocarbons and explain their presence in a variety of materials.
