Abstract
THE mouse mammary tumour virus (MTV)—or Bittner virus—is an RNA virus containing lipid1 which seems to multiply in the cytoplasm of infected cells and to be released by a budding process of the plasma membrane. Virus is released continuously without causing death of the cells. It appears that in its interaction with the cell, the virus becomes part of a steady-state complex of the type defined by Dulbecco2. It was of interest to determine whether viral replication, under the conditions in the steady-state interaction, required the participation of functional DNA—such as appears to occur with the Rous sarcoma virus3,4, a moderate, lipid-containing RNA tumour virus—or whether, as with most RNA viruses, replication was not dependent on DNA.
