Ultrastructure of the Base of Renal Tubule Cells of Marine Teleosts

Abstract

THE epithelium of the proximal and distal tubule in the mammalian kidney contains infoldings of the cell membrane in the basal region. These infoldings form compartments and contain large numbers of mitochondria1–3. The intercellular and extracellular spaces between the membranes are often dilated and were early suggested to contain fluid3,4, an observation leading to the hypothesis that they play a part in water transport.
